Take a dip in the Etang de Cazaux et de Sanguinet during your vacation in the Landes. The area is also particularly popular with fishing enthusiasts. However, some families, friends or couples come here to recharge their batteries, get away from it all and get closer to nature. Indeed, this place is brimming with nature and is ideal for those in search of a change of scenery.
Location of Etang de Cazaux and Etang de Sanguinet
The Etang de Cazaux et de Sanguinet is a vast natural pond covering an area of 5,500 hectares. This is why it belongs to both the Landes department, as it borders it, and the Gironde department. It is considered to be the largest pond in France. Located in the heart of the Landes forest, it borders Cazaux to the north-west, Sanguinet to the north-east and Biscarosse to the south. Hence the name. Its management is also shared by them.
The mare is a natural lake formed from abundant water in the Landes plains hundreds of thousands of years ago. The Gourgue watercourse was the main factor in its development. At present, access remains public, but is subject to certain conditions, which may change depending on the location of visitors.
Pond features
In addition to its surface area, the Etang de Cazaux et de Sanguinet is a lake with many special features. With its 11 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide, it is home to a variety of fish species, including perch, black bass and carp. It’s precisely for this reason that it’s the main destination for fish enthusiasts in the surrounding area. The pond is shallower at the edge, only 3 to 7 meters deep at 50 meters from shore. You need to be careful, however, as some corners can be 23 metres deep. It also has a sandy, rocky bottom. This is why the use of a boat is recommended for those wishing to venture into the depths.
The place where the Cazaux and Sanguinet lakes are located is full of trees and vegetation. It’s ideal for setting up camp. However, if you are present for more than 48 hours, you must register with your local council.
